Drive-States (Psycho-Systems Analysis)

Drift-states (Psycho-Systems Analysis), dansk

Definition

Steve Richards, founder of the Institute for Psycho-Systems Analysis (IPSA), defines "drive-states" as psychophysiological endocrine states called "Homeostatic Affects" that are paired with Panksepp's specific primary emotional systems. These drive-states are integral to understanding human motivation and behavior from a biopsychosocial perspective.

In Psycho-Systems Analysis, drive-states are conceptualized as biologically rooted emotional systems that influence our psychological experiences and behaviors. Each drive-state corresponds to a primary emotional system, such as SEEKING, RAGE, CARE, LUST, PANIC/DESPAIR, and PLAY, and is associated with specific hormonal and neurophysiological responses.

For instance, the SEEKING drive-state is linked to the SEEKING emotional system, which is associated with exploration and motivation. This drive-state is characterized by increased dopamine activity, which facilitates goal-directed behavior and the pursuit of rewards.

Similarly, the RAGE drive-state corresponds to the RAGE emotional system, activated in response to perceived threats or frustrations. This state is marked by heightened levels of cortisol and adrenaline, preparing the body for fight-or-flight responses.

By integrating these drive-states with their corresponding Pankseppian emotional systems, Psycho-Systems Analysis offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the complex interplay between biology, emotion, and behavior.
