This happened on September 3, 2017.

Something strange happened today. The sun hid just below the mountain at predawn, casting my morning jog in shadow. I ran East up the steepest grade of my path, still cloaked in the highest ridge’s darkness. Ambient light from the mountaintop revealed an elderly Japanese man descending. He stopped at my approach and met my gaze. Without a word, he beckoned me with a wide, affable smile and kind eyes.

He carried an uprooted aloe vera plant before his heart like a shakujō. In broken English, he murmured, “There is no one on the mountain.” He tilted his head, inviting my response.

I corrected him, “We are on the mountain,” my voice rising with each word, half-question, half-fact.

He beamed and spoke slowly, ensuring I understood, “There is no one on the mountain.” His eyes twinkled, urging my confirmation.

I smiled, echoing, “There is no one on the mountain.”

He nodded with an “Aye” and walked on down the west side of the mountain. Magokoro surged through me, my breath slowing into immanence.
