What is a Drømmecirkel

DreamCircles (also known as DreamMapping Circles or Group Dream Work) are facilitated group sessions where participants explore and interpret their dreams in a sacred space of heart-felt community. Rooted in the principles of DreamMapping: A process developed by Michael C. Walker to decode the symbolic language of the soul (Instinctual Consciousness), DreamCircles combine body, group power, emotion, spirit, and symbol to accelerate personal insight and healing.

In DreamCircles, members share dream symbols, images, and narratives (without needing to disclose personal backstories), then collaborate to uncover multiple layers of meaning. This format offers several benefits:

  • Accountability & Motivation: Like elite athletes training in squads, participants inspire each other, sustain momentum, and commit more fully to growth.

  • Community Healing: Members can connect through shared themes and breakthroughs, even without revealing intimate details, preserving privacy while deepening trust.

  • Pattern Recognition: Symbolic parallels across dreams help participants identify and shift unhealthy relational patterns such as overgiving or codependency.

  • Trauma Repair in the CARE System: Group interactions allow members to practice healthy give-and-take, witness boundaries in action, and rewire attachment instincts through lived, relational experience.

By merging the introspective depth of dream work with the collective power of community, DreamCircles provide an essential, accessible path for healing, self-discovery, and soul-level transformation.

Drømmecirkel FAQ

1. Who is the DreamCircle for?

The DreamCircle is for people who:

  • Feel mentally or emotionally disconnected

  • Lack direction, creativity, or inner clarity

  • Want a non-clinical yet deeply human space

  • Are curious about dreams without wanting therapy

No prior experience is required.

2. What does neuroscience say about dreams?

Current research shows that dreams simulate possible futures, integrate emotional memory, and support creative problem-solving. Dreams are not random. They are the brain’s way of testing scenarios, resolving emotional tension, and preserving cultural and personal memory. This is an adaptive function, not noise.

3. What is a Dream Circle, and how is it different from therapy?

A DreamCircle is a facilitated communal space where participants share and explore dreams as a supra-natural human intelligence, not as a clinical problem. It is not therapy, not diagnosis, and not treatment. Instead, it works with embodied experience, symbolic intelligence, and shared reflection. It functions more like a personal treasure trove of wisdom than a therapeutic intervention.

4. The workshop is in English. Will I still be able to fully understand and participate if Danish is my primary language?

Yes. While the workshop is facilitated primarily in English, a high-level Danish–English translator is present who is deeply familiar with Integrative Self-Analysis (ISA), DreamMapping, and DreamCircles. This ensures that when clarification is needed or requested, core concepts, symbolic meanings, and nuanced distinctions are translated accurately, not just literally.

The working language is English because many ISA concepts have precise technical meanings that originate in English-language neuroscience, depth psychology, and symbolic theory. However, when deeper understanding is required, the translator helps bridge meaning, not just words, so participants grasp the full intent behind terms such as Instinctual Drive, Symbolic Intelligence, and Primary Source of Consciousness.

Participants do not need perfect English. What matters is conceptual comprehension, embodied experience, and participation at one’s own pace. When necessary, key ideas can be translated, contextualized, and grounded in Danish language and cultural understanding, ensuring no one is excluded from the deeper meaning of the work.

5. Why is this workshop free?

Because the DreamCircle is understood as inherited human technology, not a luxury service. The purpose is to reactivate a capacity we are all born with, but which modern society often suppresses. It is an investment in individual balance and social cohesion, especially within local communities like Svendborg Municipality.

6. Is it safe to share personal dreams in a group?

Yes. The space is structured with clear boundaries to support psychological safety, autonomy, and consent. No one is pressured to share more than they wish. No advice, diagnoses, or evaluations are given. The DreamCircle is designed to be regulating, not overwhelming.

7. Is the DreamCircle spiritual or religious?

The DreamCircle is not religious. It is spiritually informed in the sense of being experience-based, not belief-based. There are no doctrines, rituals, or required beliefs. The focus is on direct experience, bodily awareness, and symbolic understanding.

8. What do you mean by “Primary Source of Consciousness”?

The Primary Source of Consciousness refers to the layer of awareness that arises before thought and language. It is the part of us that feels, senses, dreams, and instinctively orients us in the world. Modern affective neuroscience shows that emotion and motivation arise subcortically, prior to cognition. ISA calls this the Instinctual Consciousness.

9. What does “Instinctual Drive” mean, and why not just say “instinct”?

“Instinct” often sounds static and primitive. Instinctual Drift describes something dynamic and alive. The term is rooted in Freud’s concept of Trieb, which has historically been mistranslated. Drift is not a reflex, but a meaning-generating movement that shapes emotions, dreams, and identity. The term is updated to align with contemporary brain science.

10. Do I need to interpret dreams “correctly” to participate?

No. The DreamCircle does not work with “right” or “wrong” interpretations. We use symbolic mapping, where dream images, emotions, and bodily resonance are explored without authoritative analysis. The dreamer is always the primary reference for the meaning of their own dream.

The DreamCircle is a grounded, neuroscience-informed, and culturally compatible space for reconnecting with the part of you that already knows where you are going.

Important Terms

Instinctual Drive (Instinktuel Drift, dansk)
A new term that describes how our instincts, built into us from birth, help shape our emotions, thoughts, and dreams. Unlike the word instinct, which often sounds like a simple animal reaction, Instinctual Drive (Instinktuel Drift) shows that these inner drives are active and powerful. They send emotional signals that influence how we feel, think, and become who we are.

In English, I use the term “Instinctual Consciousness” to describe the primary seat of sentience, with ego-awareness arising as a secondary layer.

New Danish Psychology Term: New Neuroscience Says “Instinct” Isn’t Enough

Freud’s "Trieb" mistranslates as "instinct" in English and "instinkt" in Danish, missing its dynamic depth. "Instinktuel Drift" is proposed as a new Danish term, aligning psychoanalytic drives with affective neuroscience. This bridges Freud’s theory and modern brain science, urging Danish psychology to refine its nomenclature for precision.

Instinctual Consciousness (Primære bevidsthedskilde, dansk)
The foundational layer of awareness that arises from the body’s innate intelligence. Instinctual Consciousness processes emotions, sensations, and symbolic imagery before thoughts emerge. It is the primary agent guiding and informing Ego-Awareness (Ego-bevidsthed), shaping how the ego perceives, reacts, and makes meaning. Rather than being reactive or primitive, this consciousness holds deep wisdom, orienting the self toward survival, coherence, and authenticity.

Freud's Instinctual Legacy and Scientific Redemption

Freud’s instinctual legacy shines in 2025 as Affective Neuroscience proves that the seven emotional drives of SEEKING, RAGE, FEAR, PANIC/GRIEF, LUST, PLAY, and CARE prime us before cognition. Consciousness is an instinctual bottom-up process, while CBT and DBT's top-down therapies falter, even risking harm. Integrative Self-Analysis' (ISA) concept of The Instinctual Consciousness (IC), not the egoic awareness, is key and validated by Panksepp’s subcortical findings.

Ego-Awareness (Ego-bevidsthed, dansk)
A secondary and limited layer of cognition that filters and organizes experience into coherent thoughts, self-concept, and narrative identity. Unlike the deeper Instinctual Consciousness (Primære bevidsthedskilde), which processes vast emotional, sensory, and symbolic information beneath awareness, Ego-Awareness can only hold a small amount of information at once, typically 5 to 9 items, according to Miller's Law (also known as the Miller Number).

This cognitive limitation serves an evolutionary function: it allows the ego to focus selectively on immediate tasks while temporarily dissociating the overwhelming complexity of both the inner and outer world. As a result, most of what we experience is filtered out or stored unconsciously, making the ego an efficient but narrow interface for cognitive decision-making.

Symbolic Intelligence (Symbolsk intelligens, dansk)
The mind’s innate ability to communicate, process, and integrate meaning through symbols, metaphors, and imagery (especially active in dreams, daydreams, and free-association). Symbolic Intelligence allows the Instinctual Consciousness (Primære bevidsthedskilde, dansk) to express complex emotional truths and psychological dynamics in non-linear, visual, or poetic forms. It bridges instinctual knowing and Ego-Awareness (Ego-bevidsthed, Dansk), enabling personal insight, creativity, and transformation beyond rational thought.

DreamMapping (Drømme Mapping, dansk)

DreamMapping is a deep process of tracking and decoding your dreams using tools like journaling, imagination, and even body movement. It helps you listen to the unique language of your soul. Your dreams come from your Instinctual Consciousness (IC), the ancient part of you that holds your core truth. Unlike therapy methods that only focus on thinking or behavior, DreamMapping brings together body, emotion, spirit, and symbol. It was created and defined by Michael C. Walker to help people reconnect with their real genomic story, not someone else's manual.

Dreams speak a truth your cognitive mind often avoids. Mapping the symbols and narratives shows you what your Soul already knows , and what your ego needs to hear.
